Welcome to Department of Physics

In this modern time when the students are gyrating towards professional courses for easy job options, the Department of Physics is working to attract young minds towards Physics that is research as well as career oriented. The department offers a dynamic mixture of Pure and Applied Physics. Established in 1996, started with the aim to cater the needs of Laser and Optics industry. We started a Master's programme in Physics with the thrust areas of Laser Technology, Fiber Optics & Optical Communication and Materials Science. In 2006, the department has started a novel programme of M.Tech. Optical Engineering. Both the courses offer opportunities to students to branch out into various specialisations. The courses are innovatively structured with the basic knowledge in Physics and offering a big basket of options of specializations. Most of the current fields are covered by the present faculty viz. Photonics, Optical Communication, Laser Physics, Non-Linear Optics & Design that include Nano Optics & Modeling of Optoelectronic devices, light diagnostics, Materials Science in the area of Nanomaterials, Thin films and Glasses, etc.

Courses Offered:

Ph.D. (Physics)

The Department of Physics established in 1996 is the home of cutting edge PhD research and education at the forefront of Science and Technology in GJUS&T, Hisar. The thrust areas of research are broadly Photonics and Materials Science. Advancement in the areas of Thin films and Nano- materials, Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Non- linear optics and Sensors, embraces the students to choose to work at Physics Department of the University. The Ph. D. program offers direct admission to the NET-JRF qualified students and also to others through entrance examination conducted by the University, who have strong research potential. The program is flexible and student centered, facilitated by joint supervision wherever desired by the student according to need and interest that enables the students to achieve research excellence and compete with the world’s best. PhD supervisors have strong publication record and have interest in tackling research problems in innovative ways. The research environment of the department is vibrant and intensive.

Ph.D. (Optical Engineering)

M. Tech. (Optical Engineering): 2 years programme (Zero Session for Academic Session 2019-20)

OBJECTIVE : Optical Engineering is an emerging high technology field all over the world. It has spread in the areas of pure optics, astronomical optics, non-linear optics, laser engineering, biomedical optics, fibre optics communication and photonics. It finally merges with other high technology branches like MEMS and VLSI. This course in a comprehensive course which gives hands on training for students in the fabrication optical/ photonic components.

M.Sc. (Physics): 2 years programme

OBJECTIVE : The Department offers M.Sc. Physics programme which caters to the needs of application oriented world. The programme comprises of Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science and Laser Physics that forms a major tool for studying ceramics, polymers, ferrites, glass, biomolecules, non-linear optical materials etc. Photonics and Optical Communication are also recurring themes of the present course. The course on computational physics enables the students for computer simulations in research. A course on `Radiation Physics' is being offered in consultation with Health Physics Division of BARC Mumbai and Radio Ecology Centre has been established in the University. Laboratories are equipped with the modern experimental set up. One semester project work is an essential component of curriculum for M.Sc. Physics students.

Dual Degree B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics-M.Sc. (Physics): 3+2 years programme

OBJECTIVE : BSc (Hons)-MSc dual degree programme in physics has been started in the year 2016 to attract young bright students to inculcate the culture of research and development in the areas of physical sciences. The scheme and syllabi of the programme is designed with an aim to produce a skilled manpower for conducting high impact research in the academic & industrial organizations, including national research laboratories. Students passing out this 5 year programme are expected to serve as scientists at national research laboratories. The key feature of this programme is that the courses are taught on Choice Based Credit System and specialisations are offered in opto-electronics, condensed matter physics and nuclear science. One-year (two semester) project work has been introduced in this course to provide research platform to enter in various scientific laboratories.
